The timing marks a strategic inflection for Mobileye. The company is no longer primarily a supplier of autonomous driving chips to automakers. In the past year alone, it acquired the humanoid robotics startup Mentee Robotics for $900 million and announced plans to launch its own robotaxi service in a U.S. city by 2027—moves that signal a shift toward building end-to-end autonomous systems and services rather than components.
Mobileye's trajectory reflects a broader pattern in the autonomous vehicle industry: companies that began as technology suppliers to traditional automakers are now competing directly in robotaxis and robotics. The company already supplies autonomous driving systems to Volkswagen and its MOIA subsidiary, positioning itself beyond the role of chip vendor.
Shashua's departure comes as Mobileye navigates this expansion. The company was acquired by Intel in 2017 for $15.3 billion, then spun back out as a publicly traded company in 2022, though Intel remains its largest shareholder. Its origins trace to Shashua's academic research in computer vision at Hebrew University in Israel, which evolved into a dominant position supplying safety and driver-assistance chips to the automotive sector.
Mobileye has not announced who will lead the company next. The search for a successor will likely focus on candidates with experience scaling robotics and autonomous vehicle operations—capabilities that differ significantly from the semiconductor supply business that defined Mobileye's first two decades.
