Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck’s AI Startup InterPositive for $587 Million

Netflix paid $587 million in cash for InterPositive, an AI filmmaking startup co-founded by actor and director Ben Affleck, according to a regulatory filing disclosed this month. The acquisition was publicly announced in March, though Netflix withheld financial details at the time.

InterPositive develops AI tools designed to assist filmmakers during post-production by addressing what Affleck described as "real-world production challenges such as missing shots, background replacements or incorrect lighting." The startup's technology allows editors to regenerate or modify footage after principal photography wraps.

When Netflix announced the deal, Affleck stated his intention to "protect the power of human creativity"—a positioning that underscores Netflix's framing of the acquisition as an efficiency tool rather than a replacement for human talent. The entire InterPositive team joined Netflix, with Affleck taking on a senior advisor role at the company.

The $587 million figure represents the bottom end of estimates; Bloomberg reported at the time that the deal could reach $600 million in total value. Netflix has since moved to integrate the technology across its content pipeline. In its most recent earnings report, the company disclosed that approximately 300 of its titles have already deployed generative AI in production workflows.

The acquisition reflects Netflix's broader strategy to incorporate AI into filmmaking processes as production costs rise and competitive pressures mount in streaming. Whether the tool achieves meaningful adoption among Netflix's filmmaker partners remains an open question—creators' reception to AI-assisted workflows has been mixed across the industry.
