TrumpRx Covers Just 92 Brand-Name Drugs as Pharma Giants Limit Offerings
TrumpRx, Trump's flagship drug discount platform, offers discounts on just 92 brand-name medicines despite representing 17 drugmakers that produce over 800 such drugs combined. Major exclusions include Pfizer's Ibrance and Gilead's Biktarvy.
President Trump's prescription drug discount platform TrumpRx, which launched in February 2026, is operating at a fraction of its potential scope. The White House negotiated agreements with 17 drugmakers to offer discounts directly to consumers, but the program currently lists only 92 brand-name drugs—a sliver of the more than 800 brand-name medicines these companies produce combined.
The administration claimed TrumpRx has saved Americans over $400 million, though the White House has not provided verifiable data on patient numbers or which drugs drove the most usage. NPR's inquiry into these metrics went unanswered.
Pharmaceutical companies agreed to participate after the Trump administration threatened tariffs on pricing in fall 2025. Pfizer, which has the most drugs on the platform, still excludes more than 100 of its brand-name medications, including Ibrance for advanced breast cancer—a drug that costs over $15,000 monthly out of pocket according to government data.
Two signatories, Gilead and Regeneron, have not yet added any drugs to the platform. Gilead committed to listing only Epclusa for hepatitis C, omitting Biktarvy, its HIV medication and largest-selling drug. Regeneron plans to add Praluent for cholesterol management.
Dr. Ben Rome at Harvard Medical School characterized the limited offerings as performative. "For most companies, in most cases, this is a little bit more for show—to show that they're engaging—than it is for a genuine interest in selling all of their products via this mechanism," Rome said.
Ronna Hauser, senior vice president of policy and pharmacy affairs at the National Community Pharmacists Association, reported that pharmacists are seeing sporadic TrumpRx usage. "We are hearing from our members. They are having patients here and there come in, you know, seeking to access the TrumpRx price," Hauser said.
TrumpRx proves most valuable for uninsured patients needing brand-name drugs, particularly obesity medications and fertility treatments with limited insurance coverage. GoodRx, which processes TrumpRx coupons at pharmacy counters, reports that GLP-1 users are driving the bulk of platform activity.
The platform expanded in spring 2026 to include hundreds of generic drugs, though these function primarily as a search tool directing users to other discount services like Cost Plus Drugs and Amazon Pharmacy—destinations consumers can access independently.
