Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor whose four-decade career spanned art-house cinema and Hollywood blockbusters, died on Monday, Jul 13, at the age of 78, according to a statement from his family posted to his social media account.
His death in Sydney was described as "sudden and unexpected," the family said. The statement did not specify a cause of death.
Neill had disclosed in 2023 that he was diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. According to the family's statement, he "remained cancer free" at the time of his death.
Neill built a reputation as a versatile performer who moved comfortably between commercial spectacle and prestige drama. He is widely recognised for his role as paleontologist Dr Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park, and for playing the husband of Holly Hunter's character in Jane Campion's The Piano.
He was among a generation of actors and filmmakers who reached international audiences during the wave of Australian cinema that began in the late 1970s. That cohort included Paul Hogan, Mel Gibson, Geoffrey Rush, Russell Crowe, and directors Jane Campion, Peter Weir and Gillian Armstrong.
Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Neill remained closely associated with both New Zealand and Australia throughout his career, working across film and television productions in the region and internationally.
